Below is a brief description of our main providers:
Primary Care is the term for the health services that play a central role in the local community: GPs, pharmacists, dentists and midwives. Primary care providers are usually the first point of contact for a patient and play an increasing responsibility for health advice, health promotion and health treatments. In Southampton this ranges from high street pharmacists carrying out patient interventions such as effective use of inhalers to GPs carrying out more complex local treatments. The PCT is committed to the ongoing development of primary care as part of our strategy for maximising and reshaping the local health system.
Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) provides local hospital services to people living in Southampton and southern Hampshire, as well as providing specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services and children’s intensive care and Emergency Department at Southampton General Hospital. It also provides the maternity services and birthing facilities for local women in the Princess Anne Hospital.
Solent NHS Trust is the provider arm of Southampton City Primary Care Trust. The services provided are wide ranging from district nurses to specialist support for children with learning disabilities.
Southampton NHS Treatment Centre is run on behalf of the NHS by an independent company based at the Royal South Hants Hospital. It provides high quality treatments in nine specialties for Southampton people. The Treatment Centre only treats NHS patients offers safe, fast, pre‐booked day and short‐stay surgery and diagnostic procedures in specialties such as ophthalmology, orthopaedics and a range of other conditions. It deals with many common health problems, such as hip and knee replacements, hernia repairs, gallbladder surgery, gynaecological problems and cataract removal, amongst others. It includes five operating theatres, 22 beds and 40 day places, an outpatient area, an X‐ray unit, physiotherapy gym and a pharmacy.
Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (HPT) provides mental health services for Southampton people.
West Hampshire Out of Hours Service provides healthcare services outside of doctor's surgery opening times.
