Public Health Briefing Notes

Briefing Note Logo

The public health information team has produced a series of briefing notes which present and explain data on a range of health issues. The briefing notes cover topics that are of particular relevance to the population of Southampton City.

Data is presented graphically and includes time trends and comparisons within the City and elsewhere as appropriate.

The breifing notes are presented by topic; please select your topic below, and then select the report of interest from within the drop down. New and updated briefing notes are added regularly to this webpage; we welcome your comments.

Obesity - Child Growth Reports

These briefings draw on local data collected as part of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP). The report details current rates and trends over time, comparisons against regional and national data as well as identifying particular areas for concern across the City. The report includes data from 2001/02 to date and is updated annually.

Health Inequalities in Southampton City: An analysis of trends

This series of breifing notes examine the health inequalities that exist between the priority areas of Southampton and the remainder of the city. Various public health indicators are considered including mortality rates, obesity prevalence, dental health and hospital admission rates.

Sexual Health & Teenage Conceptions

These briefings aim to provide an overview of the sexual health of Southampton. Topics examined include STIs, HIV and teenage pregnancy. Where appropriate, the city is benchmarked against statistical neighbours and national figures.

Demographic Change & Locality Profiles

The demographic change briefing uses Hampshire County Council Small Area Population Forecasts to examine the demographic changes predicted for Southampton for the period 2005 to 2012. The locality profiles briefing summarises the findings from the 2005 Local Health Comparisons Report for the 5 localities in Southampton.

The Case for Preventative Healthcare in Southampton

In 2002, the Wanless report made the case for increased spending on healthcare, with a particular focus on prevention. The recently published Marmot review yet again emphasised the need for investment in prevention. This briefing uses national data to estimate the savings to the local healthcare economy that could be made from preventative interventions.

Health & Wellbeing of Women in Southampton's Communities

This briefing presents an analysis of the Southampton Women's Survey (SWS), a study based on a cohort of women aged 20-34 years interviewed between 1998 and 2002, and how it might inform our understanding of health inequalities and working with different communities within the city.
