There are 11 areas in Southampton defined as “priority for action” in the City’s Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy and these are used to measure progress in reducing health inequalities and assessing health needs.
Life expectancy at birth has increased across Southampton as a whole, but in the priority areas has been lower than that in the rest of the City, with the male life expectancy figure actually getting worse. Full details are available in this year's Public Health Annual Report.
Mortality rates
As with life expectancy, mortality rates have improved over the period for all areas although priority areas continue to have significantly worse mortality rates compared to other areas of the city.
Mortality rates from circulatory diseases, cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) have increased in the priority areas whereas they ahve decreased across the rest of the City.
